An Inverter is a device that is used when we don’t have access to direct current. It generates alternative current that replaces the direct source of current.
In case of a power inverter, the inverter does not generate any current but it comes from the direct source. The frequency, the overall power handling and the voltage differ from from appliance to another. A 50% duty cycle square wave is equivalent to a sine wave with a medium percentage of THD  Technical standards for commercial power distribution grids require less than three percent of THD in the wave shape at the customer's point of connection.
Standards recommends less than 5% THD for systems connecting to a power grid. The best suited for low intensity application is the square wave which is one of the simplest designs an inverter can produce by itself. A multiple step waveform is created by a sine wave. Whereas a power inverter substitutes for standard line power, a sine wave output is important because many electrical products are engineered to work best with a sine wave AC power source. The standard electric utility provides a sine wave, typically with minor imperfections but sometimes with significant distortion but still is widely used in electronic appliances.

Stand Alone Inverters :
Are a type of solar inverters that are used in isolated systems where the inverter draws its DC energy from batteries charged by a kind of array which is photovoltaic in nature. Many stand-alone inverters also incorporate integral chargers primarily battery chargers to replenish the battery from an AC source, when available. Normally these do not interface in any way with the utility grid, and do not need to have anti-islanding protection.
Grid tie Inverters :
Are a type of solar inverters which match the phase with a utility-supplied sine wave. Grid-tie inverters shut down automatically upon loss of utility supply and that workd wonders for safety reasons. They do not provide backup power during utility outages.
Battery backup inverters :
Are a type of solar inverter that are special inverters which are designed to draw energy from a battery, manage the battery charge via an onboard charger, and export excess energy to the utility grid. These inverters can also supply AC energy to selected loads during an outage, and are required to have anti-islanding protection.
Hybrid Inverters :
Are those that manage photovoltaic array, battery storage and utility grid, which are all coupled directly to the unit. These modern all-in-one systems are usually highly versatile and can be used for grid-tie, stand-alone or backup applications but their primary function is self-consumption with the use of storage.

These inverters are a version of solar inverters that work on a single model of PV.
