This spring, keep your skin & hair happy by playing with organic Holi colours. The combination of terrible ingredients in artificial colours (in case you're wondering: diesel, mica, glass) along with the sun's UV rays can damage your skin irreparably, causing redness, irritation and eczema – so we recommend you stay away from non-herbal Holi colours and use dollops of sunscreen. Ahead, how to make organic Holi colours, from baby pinks and mellow greens to oranges and blues, made with non-toxic and nourishing ingredients these homemade organic colours are safe to use. Have a look.
Stir up these simple recipes for making organic Holi colours at home for a safe Holi 2020.
To whip up yellow organic Holi colours, just mix 2 parts turmeric (haldi) with 4 parts gram flour (besan). Not only do these ingredients combine to create a gorgeous shade of yellow, they're also nourishing formulations that'll do wonders for your skin. After playing, you can flaunt that golden afterglow.
Made of crushed rose petals, here's a baby pink powder that's ideal to use as organic holi colour. If you have very sensitive skin, we suggest you stock up on this. And after you're done playing, mix 1 tsp honey + 1 tsp rose powder and apply it as a face pack. Leave it on for 20 minutes then rinse.
For red organic Holi colours, use sandalwood powder like the Hollywood Secrets 100% Pure Red Sandalwood Powder recommended below. Its rich pigment makes it perfect for Holi celebrations. Plus, it'll leave your skin looking radiant after. Your face will thank you.
For green organic Holi colours, get some henna (mehendi) ready. Then, just add gram powder (besan) to the mix, and see the deep henna green lighten. You can keep adding gram flour till your desired shade of green is achieved.
For pigmented maroon organic Holi colour, use this 100% unadulterated beetroot powder without any preservatives. Rich in antioxidants, vitamin B9 and manganese, it'll pamper your skin as you play, like a veritable face mask.
Brown organic Holi colours are the simplest to make – just use powdered coffee. Grind any readymade mix, like Bru Gold Instant Coffee, for a fine mix. If you want to play with creamy-browns, just add a little gram flour, and voila.
Shades like bright pink and blue are hard to find naturally, unless you're using crushed flower or fruit. Here's a simple non-toxic recipe combining cornstarch with food colour. You will need:
Step 1. Pour a little cornstarch into the bowl
Step 2. Add 1 cup of water + desired food coloring
Step 3. Add the remaining cornstarch slowly, and with gloved hands (to avoid colour transferring to your hands), keep mixing.
Step 4. Using a strainer, sift the mixture onto your cookie sheet.
Step 5. Bake your cornstarch + food colour mix at 200 degrees C for 1 hour. Check the mixture and stir every 20 minutes to avoid clumping.
Step 6. Extract from oven, cool and sift the dry powder. Store in an airtight plastic bag.
