How to Deal With Adolescent Kids

Teenage is a distinctive yet absurd age bracket between 13 to 19. The children falling in this bracket aim for individuality and still want their peer acceptance. They want to portray that they are a hub of knowledge and experience, even though they lack both. Dealing with your teen can be very challenging but you got to keep your cool. Let's have a look at the 5 most effective ways to help you deal with your yet-to-be-an-adult in a much calm way.

Ways to Deal With Adolescent Kids

1. Do Not Order Your Child to Behave

You need to understand that the more you try to become an authority for your child, the more your child will tend to push your buttons by getting on your nerves and making sure that it is not followed. That's how they will start reacting negatively to whatever you say. To handle this, all you have to do is, before telling your child what to do, make sure you are behaving in the same manner. For instance, if you want your child to talk to you politely and calmly, then you would have to set yourself as an example of being polite and calm at all times. This will make your child behave the same way whenever you are around.

2. Be Aware

You have to be aware and attentive about your child's daily behaviour. Notice the changes in them. During these teen years, your child goes through a lot, physically and mentally. There is a gush of hormones causing a lot of changes within them. They may be irritable or aggressive for every minor argument at home or among friends. This is normal, there is nothing to worry about and do not scold or shout on him/her for this. You have to be available for them at all times, this is the time when they need you. If you notice anything suspicious about your child's behaviour, talk to them, and make sure you don't sound like a spy!

3.Build a Sense of Trust

Teenagers face a lot of peer pressure. They often tend to follow their friends. Even if they are not willing to do something, they would still do it under peer pressure. Always remember, they get into problems mostly because of this and they do not ask for help from their parents simply out of fear. You have to eliminate this fear by building trust and a sense of reliability. Do not judge your child for his bad decisions, that's how he/she will learn. Make your child understand the flaws in his/her decision. Explain to your child the consequences of abrupt decision making. Share your example of how you were in the same situation once and how you overcame (give a hypothetical example if you don't have the experience to share). This will make them realize that you understand and you once went through the same.

4. Keep Calm & Analyze

If you have a heated argument with your child and he/she is not ready to listen, stay calm, take a deep breath, and count to ten. Let your child shout and finish first. It is important to let things out from your child for you to help. Make your child sit down and ask them to talk calmly, once you do that, most of the situation will be in control. Apologize for shouting and when things are in place, make your child apologize too.

5. The More You Try to Tie, The More They Will Try to Run

Always remember, if you restrict your child from anything, he/she will turn out to be more curious about doing it. As per psychology, a restriction not only increases the want of doing it more but also induces the human brain to gather information about the restriction. For example, talking openly about relationships, sex, protections, alcohol, or drugs. Do not keep information restricted for your child and correctly impart the same. It's better if the child gets to know about this from you rather than an inappropriate source.
