How To Make Sure Your Expressed Milk Stays Safe Longer
Busy moms often wonder on ways to store their breast milk for their babies. Another concern of new moms is, how long can their milk be stored and in what ways.
Here we share with you some tips on how to appropriately store breast milk and make sure that your babies are fed properly even when you're not around.
Steps For Storing, Freezing and Thawing Expressed Milk
Whether you are heading to work or are simply making sure that your breast milk's supply is enough for your baby, it is important to make sure that the expressed breast milk stays safe longer.
Your baby could be demanding milk after a gap of few hours. In such a scenario making sure that the stored milk is still safe for consumption can be a big worry for new mothers.
Here are some quick tips to keep those worries away.
1. Choose the right type of container for storing milk
If you are going for a plastic bottle, choosing food grade plastic, which is BPA (bisphenol A) free is a safe choice to make. BPA is an industrial chemical used to make certain plastic products, and can be harmful for your little one. If you are unable to get your hands on good quality plastic bottles, you can also consider buying steel or glass bottles.
2. Pick the best bay to store expressed milk
Decide the number of hours the milk is going to be stored for. If you plan to consume it within the next four hours then it will most likely stay safe at room temperature. To keep breast milk safe for a longer duration, you would need to store it in a refrigerator. You can also choose to freeze your milk in safe storage bottles or storage bags.
3. Thaw or warm up frozen expressed milk in the right fashion
New mothers can choose to keep the bottle of extracted milk in a bucket of ice to keep it safe longer. Another useful trick is to mark the bottles with date and time for storage so you know which one to pick when. Frozen milk cannot be consumed by your baby for which you need to make sure you have safely warmed up the milk. The safest way to do this is by keeping it at room temperature. If you need the milk instantly then swirl the milk bottle in warm water and wait for the temperature to rise, and then warm up the milk. Make sure you do not refreeze the milk after it has been thawed once.
