Not Electric, Entire Automotive Sector Is On MediaTek Radar In India

MediaTek is gradually increasing its market share in India. The company recently introduced its flagship chipset, the MediaTek Dimensity 9400, and highlighted it at the Indian Mobile Congress 2024. This SoC is designed for high-end smartphones with a forward-looking feature. Company's new flagship smartphone chipset optimized for edge-AI applications, immersive gaming, incredible photography, and more. Ankit Sharma from Gadgets 360 spoke to the company's Managing Director, Anku Jain, about the company's future plans.

How is the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 different and more powerful than its predecessor 9300?

Mediatek Dimensity 9400 is a flagship chipset and powerful CPU. The major USP of this chipset is built on 3nm process, boasts up to 40% greater power efficiency compared to its predecessor, enabling users to experience extended battery life. Featuring a Big Core design built on Arm's v9.2 CPU architecture, along with the most advanced GPU and NPU, this chipset delivers extreme performance in a highly power-efficient design. Company's new flagship smartphone chipset offer  immersive gaming, incredible photography, battery and more.

This chipset has more computing power and has good power efficiency with its previous one. People now use their mobile phones for multiple tasks, which requires more computing power that this chipset provides. In simple words, users will experience strong gaming, battery, and camera performance with the new chipset.

What is your strategy for the Indian market in the future? How can you maintain and increase your market share?

Our approach is straightforward: we aim to provide a complete range of chipsets. As you've seen, we offer various chipsets, from entry-level to mid-range and flagship. This gives our OEM partners the flexibility to select the chipset that best suits their target audience and market. We focus on understanding the needs of end users and develop our chipsets accordingly. We will continue to pursue this strategy in the future, introducing advanced chipsets across all ranges to strengthen our market share.

In the Q2 of 2024, MediaTek led India's smartphone chipset market with a 54 per cent share.  After smartphones, TVs, what's the new growth engine for MediaTek's in India market?

Although our focus is on all segments, we believe a significant market for the company will now come from the automotive sector, both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. We aim to achieve the same success in the automotive sector that we have experienced in the mobile sector. Additionally, we have introduced smart digital clusters and modules in partnership with Jio Platforms Limited. Given this, we are rapidly advancing our efforts in this sector.

Things are changing rapidly in the automotive sector as well, so for MediaTek, will the electric segment surpass traditional ICE vehicles?

It is a bit too early to say this. However, it's not just the electric segment that will drive revenue growth for MediaTek in the automotive sector; it is certainly one part, but ICE engine vehicles are also a priority for us. Whether it's two-wheelers or four-wheelers, all ICE engine vehicles require advanced technology. Today, there is a demand for features like ADAS, AI, and connectivity in the ICE segment, including electric vehicles, and we are committed to fulfilling those needs. People want their vehicles to function like running computers, so the entire automotive sector is on our radar.

What is your opinion on 6G, how company is prepared for it, and will India lead the 6G rollout
worldwide?

If you listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at the India Mobile Congress, you'll see how serious the government is about 6G. While we may have lagged behind in the 4G rollout, our government has done a commendable job with the 5G rollout, and the same is certainly happening with 6G. I believe it will take 4 to 5 years for 6G to be launched, and we will be among the leading countries in the world for its rollout. MediaTek is already working on 6G, and we released a white paper on 6G last year, which demonstrates our commitment to providing new technology to our consumers.
