Books Vs Smartphones: What Should Your Child Pick When at Home

Books are our best friends! That's what we have learnt since the beginning of our childhood, haven't we? Well, how many of us really made them our best friends? I bet just a few. My friend, reading is a habit. Studies from all around the world reveal that children start picking up their parent's habits at 1.5 years of age. I have amazing hacks which can help you inculcate reading habits in your children from a very young age. Thank me later!

Books Vs Smartphones: What Should Your Child Pick When at Home

1. Read In Front of Your Children

Children notice each and every step of yours. You might not even notice when they would start imitating you. The best you can do here is pick up a book and read whenever your child is playing around.

2. Read Your Child to Sleep

Read from the book with proper expressions, you would not believe that your child would be curious to hold the book and watch the story through the picture while you read it out to him/her. This would be your first step to success.

3. Introduce Characters and Stitch Them to Reality

If you are reading a book about a girl called Cathy going to the market with her mommy, engage your child in a conversation where he/she once was in the same situation. Indulge her into questions as to what all did he/she saw while going to the market, what all did mommy buy, what did he/she like. Remember! Always open arms to your child's questions. This is a sign that they want to know more and their curiosity plays the most important role here.

4. Do Not Use Smartphones In Front of Your Child

While you progress towards bringing books close to your child, the only rule you have to follow is to control your habit of using the smart-phone while the child is around. A toddler is curious about anything and everything that is around and if the child watches you playing games, scrolling through videos or watching series, then be ready for the consequences. Before you could even realize, the child would be so curious to get the smartphone in his/her hand and then they would start imitating you. Now that's what we don't want to happen, right?

5. Never Handover the Phone To Calm Your Child

We aren't surprised when we see children crying in the public areas and parents giving them their smart-phones to watch a cartoon or anything that could engage them and stop them from crying. Our lives are on a fast track, we do not have enough time for our own children. Realizing that the future lies in those toddlers is the need of the hour. Children have a very sharp memory and by losing your patience, the child now knows what it would take to get that gadget in a minute and that's where the habit begins from!

The saying- "Practice what you preach" holds very true while parenting. Your child inculcates the habit that you have. So in order to inculcate the best habits in your child, you must start following them right away.
