Things to be kept in mind before buying a canvas:

• Fabric: If you are looking for a fine quality canvas, go for the one made from linen. However, if linen is too expensive for you, go for an affordable cotton canvas.

• Texture: Different textures are suited for different types of paintings. For detailed works, go for a canvas with smooth surface and for large sized paintings, even a rough textured one would be fine. 

• Prime: For portraying the true colours of a paint, primed canvases are preferred. However, if you plan on getting dull and textured colour, an un-primed canvas would be a better choice. 

• Weight: Heavier the weight, greater the tension that canvas fabric can take without tearing. If you have to work on a large stretched canvas, the canvas with heavier weight is preferred.
