Things To Consider Before Buying Watercolour Paper Surface
Type
Watercolour papers are mainly available in three surface types- hot pressed, cold pressed and rough. While hot pressed watercolour papers are smoothest and are perfect for detailing, the cold pressed papers are a little rough. Their textured surface is compatible with many techniques and applications and is ideal for beginners. The rough type, as the name suggests is the most textured watercolour paper and is perfect for bringing out the most of the granulation of watercolours.
Paper Weight
Watercolour sheets can be lightweight or heavyweight depending upon the material used (cotton or wood pulp). While the lightweight ones require stretching before painting, this step can be skipped with the latter. Additionally, the heavyweight sheets do not get spoiled with multiple washes.
Manufacturing Methods
These papers can either be made with the help of cylindrical moulds or advanced machines. While the former are known for their heavier weights, impressive watermarks and superior surface stability, the latter ones provide a more smooth surface for colours.
