Duolingo Rolls Out 28 New Language Courses in Indian Languages

Duolingo has launched 28 new language courses aimed at Indian users, allowing learners to study languages such as Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, and German using Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Telugu as base languages. According to the company, the expansion is intended to make global language learning more accessible across India, particularly for users from non-metro areas who prefer learning in their native languages.
This move aims to break down language barriers for millions across India, especially in non-metro regions, by offering access to global language learning through familiar Indian languages, said company in a press release. The courses are designed to help users explore global culture, boost career prospects, or simply enjoy learning, all through Duolingo's gamified platform.
“Since the launch of our Indic language courses, we have seen a steady rise in learners from non-metro cities using their native languages - especially Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali - to learn English,” said Karandeep Singh Kapany, Regional Marketing Director, Duolingo India. “This trend shows us that language learning works best when it begins in your mother tongue. Building on this insight with this expansion, we are not only meeting India's growing appetite for global languages but also giving millions from Bharat the chance to confidently step onto the global stage and explore the world - simply, comfortably and in the Indian languages they already know.”
The new courses follow Duolingo's signature model of bite-sized lessons, interactive characters, and offline access, targeting India's young and digitally savvy learners. They primarily cater to beginners, supporting CEFR A1-A2 levels, and feature immersive tools like “Stories” for reading and “DuoRadio” for listening practice. More advanced content is set to roll out through 2025.
Globally, this expansion more than doubles Duolingo's course offerings and stands as the largest content rollout in the company's history. The scale and speed of development were driven by advances in generative AI, which enabled Duolingo to produce nearly 150 new courses in under a year.
“It took about 12 years to develop our first 100 courses and now in about one year we're able to create and launch nearly 150 new courses. This is a great example of how generative AI can directly benefit our learners,” said Luis von Ahn, CEO and co-founder of Duolingo. “It reflects the incredible impact of our AI and automation investments, which allowed us to scale at unprecedented speed and quality.”
