International Day of Families 2020 : Celebrated On 15th May In the year 1993, the General Assembly decided that 15 May of every year should be observed as The International Day of Families. Celebrating this day will provide an opportunity to promote awareness of family issues and encouragement to increase knowledge on how demographic, economic, educational and social elements affect our families.

This day was incubated with keeping a set of 17 goals in aim to eliminate poverty, discrimination, abuse and preventable deaths, address environmental destruction, and usher in an era of development for all people, everywhere. Families and family-oriented policies and programmes are vital for the achievement of many of these goals.

Families and intergenerational interactions amongst family members help the world during any crisis. During the Covid-19 crisis it is those poor and in-abundant families who are bearing the brunt of the situation. Hence, it has become imperative more than ever to focus on families who have lost their younger ones, elder ones and who have lost their daily bread.

People who are lucky to have families around during these tough times are lucky and should consider themselves blessed. The International Day of Families has become even more of relevance in today's crisis situation as some of us have lost our dear ones while some are getting to spend more time with the family.

Theme of the International Day Of Family 2020 is Families in Development: Copenhagen & Beijing + 25. In the year 1995, Beijing and Copenhagen proposed the importance of family and its role in our social development and decided to observe this day as an initiative for the well-being of all individuals in the family.
