Rahat Indori's Most Loved Shayaris
“Rahat Indori, the revolutionary poet passes away” – this sentence brought turmoil in poets and poetry enthusiasts all over the world, on the evening of August 11. A prolific Urdu poet known for his bold works, Rahat Sahab never shied away from taking a dig on the authority or expressing his sharp political opinions. However, being a great and diverse poet that he was, his works on love, romance and tenderness too touched upon many hearts. He even wrote many soul-stirring songs for Bollywood. He was one of the few poets who took forward the culture of mushaira (an evening social gathering at which Urdu poetry is read, typically taking the form of a contest) at a global level. He was popular amongst all age groups, a culture that was evident in his performances at the six year old Urdu festival, Jashn-E-Rekhta. Hundreds of youth as well elderly would wait for hours under a fancy tent in the backdrop of a beautiful evening moon, to watch him perform. His introductions were inevitably followed by thunders of applause and repetition of his works after him by the audience. The book signing scenarios were another tale to tell. It can never be enough to talk about poets like him in words.
Remembering Rahat Sahab, we bring to you some of his most loved shayaris. Irshad!
