Best Lemon Teas and Their Health Benefits

Lemon tea swirling in my gorgeously crafted porcelain mug resembled the artwork that the sky was dashing off, that evening. The mint leaves sat on these swirls likely a delicately placed green crown and added a tint of freshness to my tea. My taste buds couldn't deny the sinfully pleasurable tanginess of this delightful sip blended with perfect quantities of lemon juice, green tea, diced ginger, and cinnamon powder. As I devoured this heavenly beverage, the curiosity to find more about it came naturally to me. While the internet approved my beverage with full enthusiasm, I decided to turn to Dr Bhupender Tyagi, a naturopath and cleansing advisor based in Delhi to find in detail the multiple health benefits of lemon tea. Here is how the conversation flowed.

Lemon tea is also widely popular as a home remedy for various ailments

Lemon Tea: A Treasure Trove Of Taste And Health

Our conversation started off with the mutual love for this piquantly flavoured drink and inevitably grew into a heartful discussion about its versatility. Tyagi gave the nudging approval to the internet and agreed upon some of the most popular health benefits of lemon tea including immunity boost, regulation of blood sugar levels, improved cardiovascular health, and healthier skin.

“Lemon tea keeps the body hydrated and being a rich source of Vitamin C, it is also a very popular remedy for common cold and flu,” claimed Tyagi. He, however, advised to keep at bay from it in case of a sore throat. The tanginess of lemon might irritate the already infected throat and might even worsen the swelling of nodes.

Lemon tea is also popularly drunk as a home remedy for treating swollen gums. Many even experience lower levels of anxiety and bouts of depression, with regular consumption. Rich in flavonoids such as hesperidin and diosmin, this beverage is also effective in lowering the cholesterol levels and preventing the occurrence of cardiac elements or strokes, thereby augmenting the cardiovascular health.

Moving forward, we discussed the ideal time for drinking lemon tea. “It totally depends on your purpose. For instance, if you are planning on drinking this beverage for weight loss, it is recommended to consume it on an empty stomach. On the contrary, if you want to improve your digestion, drink it after 15-20 minutes of finishing your meal,” he opined.

Different Styles Of Drinking Lemon Tea

Lemon tea may or may not be mixed with black or green teas, depending upon the taste preferences

Like any other tea, people from all around have had experimented with the way they want to drink it. One of the easiest and most popular styles is boiling in a vessel some water, lemon tea premix, diced ginger, and a few tablespoons of jaggery. This concoction is then strained and enjoyed with garnishing.

“I love this simple preparation! It is the purest and freshest form of enjoying lemon teas,” exclaimed Tyagi. Some also prefer to add black or green teas to this mixture, in which case, the lemon juice is usually added after straining the rest of the boiled mixture.

Another hack is to freeze lemon juice in ice trays and mix it to warm or cold water, which has tea already steeped in it, whenever the desire to devour this heavenly drink kicks in. Some culinary artists also prefer to add springs of mint, maple syrup, raw honey, cinnamon or turmeric to their cups. You can alternatively, go for ready-made ones which just need to be dipped in warm water for a refreshing sip.

What To Avoid

Excessive lemon tea consumption may flush out essential minerals from the body

While it is totally natural to fall for this wondrous drink, it comes with a consumption limit, like any other edible. Tyagi warned the tea lover in me, “It is usually advised to not drink more than two to three cups per day with each measuring no more than 100ml. Drinking in excess will burden the kidney and will flush out all the minerals from the body. It is similar to drinking excessive water, tempting but dangerous.”

He further advised not to mix this with any “green juice” such as extracts from leafy vegetables, which nullifies the effect.

Drinking lemon tea in excess might also erode the tooth enamel or increase the frequency of your bathroom visits. It is usually advised to rinse your mouth with plain water after having lemon tea to reduce the risk if you are an avid drinker.
