Air-purifying smart masks will soon hit the markets, as announced by the South Korean multinational electronics company, LG. In the already ongoing pandemic, triggered by the spread of infected respiratory droplets, the mask may revolutionise the spread of the coronavirus.

Besides containing the spread of the respiratory droplets, these masks will come handy in filtering air pollution, as well as germs. These face masks will come with two attached built-in HEPA filters, similar to the ones used in air-purifying products designed for homes. These filters can be replaced, making these masks a long-term purchase. Interestingly, as the filters are filled to their full capacity and will require a change, the users will be notified through the LG ThinQ mobile application.

These masks run on an 820mAh battery for nearly eight hours, when used on low mode, and for two hours when used on high power mode. Making them even more tech-savvy, the accompanying case will also be able to charge the mask, as well as sanitise it, through the already installed UV-LED lights in it. These smart-masks will also have dual fans to assist breathing by reducing resistance. In addition to these, the respiratory sensors will “detect the cycle and volume of the wearer's breath and adjust the dual three-speed fans accordingly.”

LG has decided to donate as many as 2,000 of these smart masks to the Severance Hospital in Seoul. “The PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier is an exciting addition to our growing line-up of products designed to deliver meaningful health and hygiene benefits. At a time when consumers are seeking ways to make life safer and more convenient, it's important that we're able to offer solutions that add measurable value,” says Dan Song, the president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company.

Keeping in mind, the rampant plastic pollution due to surgical masks, inevitable for curbing the coronavirus, LG has decided to give these masks a green thumb. The masks, as well as the headbands, will be recyclable and thus, environmentally-friendly.

These smart masks will be launched in the IFA Berlin Exhibition, one of the world's largest trade shows for consumer electronics and home appliances, between September 3-5 , and will be available in select markets later in the year. LG is likely to reveal the price for the masks during this virtual exhibition.
